Support overview

Decibel Meter is a professional iOS noise monitoring app that combines a real-time sound level meter, voice-activated audio recording, and video evidence with burned-in decibel overlays. Whether you are tracking apartment noise, calibrating your device against a known reference, or exporting clips for a landlord or HOA, this page covers the most common questions.

Noise monitoring tips

Use Standard mode (dBA) when you want readings that match how loud sound feels to human ears — ideal for speech, traffic, and everyday ambient noise. Switch to High Sensitivity mode (dBZ/dBC) when you suspect low-frequency sources such as subwoofers, HVAC units, or heavy footsteps through drywall; this mode exposes structural vibration that standard decibel apps often miss.

For best accuracy, calibrate your iPhone microphone in Settings using a 94 dB reference if available, and keep the device at a consistent distance from the sound source. Overnight monitoring and voice-activated clips can help document intermittent disturbances without keeping the app in the foreground.

Frequently asked questions

Is Decibel Meter a certified sound level meter?

No. Readings are reference measurements from your phone’s microphone. Use a professional meter for certified measurements. The App is useful for monitoring trends, documentation, and everyday comparisons.

Why are High Sensitivity readings higher than Standard mode?

High Sensitivity captures more physical sound energy, including low frequencies you may not hear. That is expected — it helps find hidden noise sources, not match subjective loudness.

Where are my recordings saved?

Voice recordings and videos are stored in the App’s Files tab on your device. You can share or export them using the system share sheet.

Background monitoring drains battery?

Yes. Keeping the microphone active in the background uses more power. Enable it only when you need continuous monitoring while the App is not in the foreground.

Microphone permission was denied — what now?

Open Settings → Decibel Meter → Microphone and enable access. Monitoring and recording cannot work without it.
